Hamilton at Keller Auditorium

Musical writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, fresh off his success from his previous Broadway play, In the Heights, conceptualized Hamilton for a few years before it debuted in the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2015. It was in this opening that he also portrayed the title role. The whole production, including its talented cast and impressive music received extremely positive praise from both critics and new fans alike.

The production, as most know, is a historical tale created about one of the Nations Founding Fathers, but Hamilton takes a new and forward-thinking approach, as seen in the music styles chosen and particularly in its diverse casting. Plus, the 2016 Tony Awards, where Hamilton bagged 11 out of 16 nominations, is a display of its success. the show’s initial cast included the actors, Philippa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jonathan Groff. Individually, the cast was already filled with both famous nominees and awardees, but their diverse and strong performances collected together brought Hamilton to a brand-new level. The creative team, just as equally talented, earned Tony Awards for the show. Thomas Kail for Best Direction, Andy Blankenbuehler for Best Choreography, Alex Lacamoire for Best Orchestrations, Howell Binkley for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Paul Tazewell for Best Costume Design of a Musical, and of course the man himself Lin-Manuel Miranda for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, all stole the show at the 2016 Tony Awards. Above all and unsurprisingly, the Musical also won Best Musical for the year. The present cast and production crew in each new location where Hamilton is on tour brings the same grit and enthusiasm in their runs, with overwhelming positive reviews posted regularly.

Hamilton’s unceasing rise to fame led to opening many doors all over the world for the fans to experience the show. It has continued for the past decade to perform not just in America, but also across the pond in the U.K. and in various theaters across Asia. Hamilton’s limited season will be making its way to Portland throughout March (and on Sunday 9th March 2025) at Keller Auditorium, performing at yet another world-class stage with the top facilities and sound engineering that rivals even Broadway and West End theaters.
