For a limited period only, the comic opera Falstaff will be returning to Portland, Oregon on May 10th, 2025 at the Keller Auditorium. Composed by Giuseppe Verdi and with its libretto written by Arrigo Boito, this unique, classic opera remains to be one of the best because of its humor, wit, and mischief that isn’t often found in the operatic genre.
Based on the fictional life of medieval knight Sir John Falstaff, the show named after him was Verdi’s final masterpiece and leaned heavily into comedy unlike the rest of his work. It would be impossible for audience members to hold their laughs as Falstaff, Alice Ford, Meg Page, and the other characters hatch their plans which ultimately turn into entertaining and utterly humiliating moments!
See how Falstaff changed the landscape of opera by presenting something fresh and unserious for its audiences; buy your tickets now, before they run out!
A reimagining of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and The Merry Wives of Windsor, the opera Falstaff tells the story of Sir John Falstaff, who because of misfortune, comes up with a scheme to seduce Alice Ford and Meg Page (the wives of two very wealthy men) for personal financial gain. His plans lead to a series of plots and counterplots between Falstaff and the other characters which result in a humorous cocktail of happenings, full of joy, merriment, and mischief, but also confusion, deception, and humiliation. Throughout his tale, you’ll find yourselves laughing out loud uncontrollably, all while still being in awe of the raw talent of the stage actors and the entire production!
For both longtime opera fans as well as newcomers to the genre, Falstaff is considered to be the best entry point. Both composer Giseuppe Verdi and librettist Arrigo Boito delved away from the typical dramatic approach; compared to the usual serious themes of the opera, Falstaff is intentionally a comedy experience and shows how diverse opera can actually be. It uses comic relief and parodies madrigal and church hymns to the audiences’ delight, and you’ll surely leave the theater with a smile (or tears of joy!) on your face.
Falstaff will be performed by veteran actors and singers Darren Drone (Sir John Falstaff), Kearstin Piper Brown (Alice Ford), and Rehanna Thelwell (Mistress Quickly) among others. They will also be joined by Nicholas Fox and David Radamés Toro as the conductor and stage director of the opera respectively.
