Set specifically during the period concurrent with the Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of France who was pronounced guilty for almost two decades because of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he runs away and searches for a second chance to live his life; he then uses a new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and set on apprehending and bringing Jean Valjean back to prison.

Happening over a span of approximately 20 years covered by the show's two acts, Jean Valjean becomes involved through fated encounters with several key characters throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory employees who gives birth to an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the foster daughter of Jean Valjean, who turns out to be Fantine’s daughter; Marius, a student on the side of the revolt and the true love of Cosette. Side characters shown in the play are the Thénardiers, immoral innkeepers who pay no heed to their daughter and are obsessed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their daughter, who hides her true feelings for Marius; and comrades of the rebellion specifically Gavroche, a naive but resourceful street urchin, and the revolt’s fearless leader, Enjolras.

This motley cast of characters who are part of one struggle and their personal hardships are adapted skillfully on live stage, not just with the musical's 1800s French-inspired clothing and stage creations, but distinctly with the musical being sung-through fully from start to finish. With hit numbers like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing song list, Les Mis is able to reveal the real and unmasked personalities hidden deep in each and every character that plays out beautifully in each performance.
