"Six — The Musical" made its official opening on London’s West End in 2019. It had a well-received run until the COVID pandemic interrupted shows for most of 2020.
The musical-comedy persevered to grow in popularity and was the subject of many tours around the world. Eventually moving to New York City, where it was the first new play to appear on Broadway after COVID-19.
It continues to tour across North America, Canada and the world today. An fascinating twist to the writing of "Six" was that Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss used actual musical icons to model the characters. They used inspiration from artists like Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Alicia Keys for the character development.

"Six" is the tale of the lives of the wives of King Henry the 8th, who was a controversial king of England in the early 1500s. During his nearly four decades as king, he married six times. His efforts to leave his first marriage led to the separation of the Church of England. Many people probably know the story of Henry VIII. However, you may not have learned the story of his many wives. That’s where "Six" picks up.
The musical focuses on the story of these six queens as they recount their difficult experiences with the king. The queens compete for who had the roughest experience in being married to the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, adultery, and even beheadings in a way that amuses you while also touching your emotions. There is a relatable twist on the story by incorporating a dating app through a parody.
Eventually, they realize that arguing over who had the most awful experience with Henry VIII is not helpful. They come to realize that Henry VIII robbed them of their individuality. They are not just the six wives of Henry VIII - they have their personal strengths that deserve celebrating. The Six eventually work together to write new endings to their stories. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by dreaming of what their lives would’ve been like without seeing Henry VIII.
