The Book Of Mormon

Keller Auditorium

Well-known as one of the greatest theatre venues in Portland, Keller Auditorium has always been the coveted choice as a play or show venue, largely because of its smashing interior and exterior architecture that is both functional and visually appealing. The play will be staged for a limited time in Keller Auditorium in May, on Wednesday 28th May 2025.

Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, once again created another hilarious production but in an entirely new medium for them. This time being in in classical theatre. The Book of Mormon, centered on Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, two Mormon missionaries of the Mormon faith, are assigned to baptize and convert the local villagers of a village in Uganda. The play, despite the risk of offending the church, delves away from a sedated approach to sharing this story, as it instead uses satire and even blasphemy to challenge and question the way religion is passed on and religious stories are interpreted.

Theatre fans globally and for the past decade since its Broadway premiere in 2011 have generally welcomed The Book of Mormon positively. Despite mocking religious teachings, and often satirical, it also comes with a heartfelt message to its viewers beneath its language. Throughout its two acts, the musical perfectly transforms from a play full of cursing, sex, and profanity to a story that forces the audience to be introspective. In one of their reviews, The New York Times highlights this and stated that “The central theme of The Book of Mormon is that many religious stories are silly – the idea that God would plant golden plates in upstate New York. Many religious doctrines are rigid and out of touch. But religion itself can do enormous good as long as people take religious teaching metaphorically and not literally; as long as people understand that all religions ultimately preach love.”
