The Book Of Mormon

Keller Auditorium

Historically famous as one of the finest theatre venues in Portland, Keller Auditorium has always been the fans' top choice as a play or show venue, largely because of its awe-inspiring interior and exterior architecture that is both functional and visually appealing. The Book of Mormon will be performing for a limited period in Keller Auditorium in May, on Friday 30th May 2025.

Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, once again succeeded in creating another smash hit but in an entirely new medium for them. This time being in in classical theatre. The Book of Mormon, centered on Kevin Price and Arnold Cunningham, two missionaries of the Mormon faith, begin on their journey to baptize and convert the local population of a village in Uganda. The show, however serious it may sound, delves away from a serious approach to telling this story, as it instead uses satire and even blasphemy to reveal the truth behind the way religion is taught and religious stories are interpreted.

Theatre fans all over the world and for over a decade since its Broadway premiere in 2011 have generally welcomed The Book of Mormon positively. Despite mocking religious teachings, and often satirical, it also comes with a lesson that actually supports faith and religion beneath its language. Throughout its two acts, the musical perfectly transforms from a play full of cursing, sex, and obscenity to a story that challenges and provokes thought – specifically how we, as viewers, treat religion and supernatural stories. In one of their reviews, The New York Times recognizes this and stated that “The central theme of The Book of Mormon is that many religious stories are silly – the idea that God would plant golden plates in upstate New York. Many religious doctrines are rigid and out of touch. But religion itself can do enormous good as long as people take religious teaching metaphorically and not literally; as long as people understand that all religions ultimately preach love.”
