Disney’s The Lion King came on to the Broadway scene with a distinctive technique; many say that the musical, beginning with its opening night, had elevated the retelling of The Lion King's narrative and transformed into more than the usual adaptation. With its execution and combination of dance, costume design, and mainly 3D puppetry, the musical turned into a very well-defined performance matching up to to all others. Since the plot of this stage adaptation features animals, mainly the young Lion Prince Simba and exile and eventual return to his home, the hurdle for the production was to bring this tale to life on stage without looking fake. Julie Taymor, the show director, embraced this challenge and equally embraced the skill of puppetry, skillfully utilizing 3D animal puppets for the Broadway play interspersed with accurate costumes based on African tribes that upgraded the Broadway classic.
In current times, Disney's The Lion King has undoubtedly cemented its position as one of the most sought-after shows in every country it has visited. With two productions worldwide that have been running for over a decade and counting, and four other productions that have been running for more than 20 years, The Lion King continues to make theatrical history. The Broadway hit has been said to repeatedly pull in from both usual theatergoers and reviewers alike from its performances, while garnering numerous awards and nominations, among many, Grammy Awards and Molière Awards.
Since its first showing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1997 and its following shift to Broadway, New York in October of 1997, the musical has become boundless with its tours over several countries. Spanning several tours for over two decades, it has been holding seasons in several cities with both local North American and international seasons, spanning locales in Europe such as Spain, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and even Singapore, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in Asia which only is a part of a very extensive record of regions.
